Fr. James A. Martin, SJ (1902-2007)

Most of us know or at least have heard about the Fr. Martin Cup. It's the country's premier college preseason basketball tournament before the corporate-sponsored leagues surfaced (Nike, Fil-Oil, Flying V, etc).

Let's take time out to ackowledge the person behind the name.

Fr. Martin brought modern basketball to the Philippines in 1928. He was one of the founders of the NCAA, and is considered the father of Ateneo basketball.

The Ateneo community, through Fr. Nebres, received word that Fr. Martin passed away last October 1. He was 105.

Together with the entire Jesuit community, let us pray for the eternal repose of his soul. May he rest in peace.
